Gabapentin is a medication used as an anticonvulsant and analgesic. Originally it was developed to treat epilepsy, and is currently used to relieve neuropathic pain and restless leg syndrome. It is recommended as a first line agent for the treatment of neuropathic pain arising from diabetic neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia, and central neuropathic pain. It is a structural analogue of the inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
Gabapentin is used with other medications to prevent and control seizures. It is also used to relieve nerve pain following shingles (a painful rash due to herpes zoster infection) in adults. Gabapentin is known as an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug.
