Orthodontic devices which can be taken out by the patient for cleaning and which may be designed to apply forces to teeth by means of springs, screws and other mechanical components
What are the advantages of removable appliances?
Removable by patient and therefore readily cleaned
difficult to apply excessive force
Construction mainly in laboratory - little surgery time
What are the disadvantages of removalbe appliance ?
- Limited type of tooth movement
- anchorage may be difficult
- retention is more difficult
- need pt cooperation and some skill from the patient
- less successful in lower arch as there is less tolerance
