When the inlet pressure on the spool increases more than the force of the spring pressing, the spool moves forward and connects the P and T ports, the excess oil to drain back into the oil reservoir as pressure relief, the function of the orifice is to increase the valve stationary, diminish the oil pressure impulse, the force of spring can be adjusted by the adjustment bolt.
If a higher pressure or a larger flow rate control by the direct drive type relief valve, the large rigidity of the hard spring should be adopted, structural dimensions required will be large, but it is difficult to adjust the oil pressure and flow rate fluctuations, therefore, the direct-acting relief valve is generally used only for low pressure in a small flow system, or used as a pilot valve.
