How to Change Your Windshield Wiper Blades
As winter approaches in much of the United States and weather conditions worsen it is time to make sure that your vehicle is ready to make it through the winter. Though there are many things to consider when winterizing your vehicle for travel through the conditions and dropping temperature, we will begin with one of the most overlooked items on your vehicle, windshield wipers. Windshield wipers should be considered a safety item and needs periodic inspection and replacement. There is no better time to inspect and replace wiper blades then before those big winter storms come in. So follow this handy how to guide and you will be better prepared for driving in the wintry conditions that will soon be upon us.
If your current windshield wipers leave streaks on your window, make high pitch noises while in action, or chatter while in use, chances are they are due for replacement. Typically, windshield wipers last for about one year, though some low quality models may only last a few months and some cars goes through wiper blades quicker than others. However, you should not wait for the next big snow storm or thunder storm to find out you need new wiper blades. If your wiper blades do not work sufficiently in a light rain, they will not work at all in a heavy rain or big snow storm.
A visual inspection of your wiper blades is the best way to tell if they need to be replaced. Look at your wiper blades to see if they have cracks in the rubber or separation from the base. Also inspect the wiper blade arms for any damage such as rust or bent supports. If your wiper blades feel brittle to the touch they will also need to be replaced.
Once it is determined that you need new wiper blades, it is time to head to the local auto parts store. Each store will carry several brands of wiper blades and also different types such as winter specific blades. I recommend buying the entire wiper blade rather than just a replacement cartridge. The whole wiper blade will last longer and is easier to install than a replacement cartridge. My preferred brand for performance, price, and longevity is Anco. Consult the guide for fitment for your particular vehicle or ask an associate for help. Most vehicles will take two different size blades. One is for the driver's side and the other is for the passenger side. Once you have chosen your replacement wiper blades all that is left to do is to install them.
Believe it or not, most auto parts stores will do the install for you. You can go ahead and let them do it or you can do it yourself following these simple directions. First take both wiper blades that are on the car and lift them up. On the underside of each wiper blade is a small plastic clip. Locate this clip and push down on it. Once depressed, you simply slide the old wiper blade off. Installing the new wiper blade is as simple as sliding it on until you hear a click. Repeat this procedure for both sides of the car and you are done.
Now you are ready for that next big storm and your wiper blades are up to the task. The new wiper blades will provide you with better vision and in turn will make for a safer driving experience.
