The fused-silica provides better optical transmission than standard N-BK7 glass, particularly for UV and near-UV wavelengths. The increased transmission allows systems to operate with less laser power, extending laser lifetime, and also reduces heat build-up in the lens due to absorption, extending lens lifetime.
