Double Row Angular Contact ball bearings have two rows of balls arranged back-to-back. The lines of action of the load at the contact between balls and raceways (load lines) diverge at the bearing axis and form an angle of 30° to the radial plane. In essence, they work similarly to having a matched pair of Single Row Angular Contact ball bearings either face-to-face or back-to-back. The difference is that Double Row Angular Contact ball bearings can take a bi-directional axial load in one bearing where it takes a matched pair otherwise. This means the bearings are particularly suitable for accommodating simultaneously acting radial load and axial load in both directions. They are also available with seals or shields.
Double Row Angular Contact ball bearings may offer some economic benefits as well as handling and mounting benefits versus pairs of Single Row Angular Contact ball bearings; however, they may offer less design flexibility and performance in some cases.
Double Row Angular Contact ball bearings are available in two numerical series:
5200 Series – Lighter load, higher speed, more/smaller balls per bore diameter.
5300 Series – Heavier load, slower speed, fewer/larger balls per bore diameter.
Double-row angular contact ball bearing is double-sealed and has a 20-degree contact angle, pressed steel cage, and normal clearance rating. It supports radial loads, thrust loads in both directions, and combined loads, and occupies less thrust space than a pair of single-row angular contact ball bearings mounted together. Because the two rows of rolling elements are mounted back-to-back, the bearing arrangement is relatively rigid and can accommodate tilting moments. The 52 series has a smaller cross section than the 53 series, making it suitable for smaller spaces, lighter loads, and higher speeds. This bearing is made of low-alloy, through-hardened carbon chromium steel for durability and resistance to deformity under heavy loads. The 20-degree contact angle of the balls in relation to the raceways gives the bearing a greater capacity for supporting thrust loads over bearings with a standard contact angle of zero degrees. Rubber seals on both sides of the bearing keep out contaminants such as dirt and grime and hold in lubricant applied at manufacture. This bearing has a pressed steel cage to prevent the balls from coming into contact with each other during use, reducing friction, vibration, and noise. The bearing has a normal axial internal clearance designation, making it suitable for applications where the load and speeds do not result in thermal expansion. This clearance provides latitude for self-realignment and compensates for static and dynamic alignment errors. This angular contact ball bearing is for use in commercial and industrial applications including pumps and compressors, automotive drives, gearboxes, and printing machines, among others.
Double row bearings are used in applications where there are high radial loads, low speeds and where thrust loads are comparatively low Most sizes are available with metal shield (ZZ) or rubber seals (2RS). Filling slot (max capacity) styles are available. Bore dimension range is from 10mm to 110mm.
