A hand shower is usually attached to the taps in the bath, and is also known as a hand held shower head. These vary a lot from the old plastic, or rubber fixtures that pushed onto taps to give you a hand shower. These were usually white or grey and had a length of plastic hose which would eventually split. There are some of these around still and some people find them quite adequate but they are difficult to use when it comes to getting the water temperature right. They tend to go hot and cold as the water pressure changes when someone turns a tap on somewhere in the house, or flushes the toilet. However, there are many people who still use them.
A modern hand shower is made of chrome, or some other kind of metal and is a lot more robust than the rubber and plastic type. Inside the pack of your hand held shower head you get the metal coated hoses which fit onto your taps, a hose and a hand set which can be fixed to the wall unit with a purpose made fitting, if this is what you want to do with it.
The mixer type hand shower fits into three holes on your bath. The hot and cold hose go into one each and the shower comes out of the middle. Some kinds of hand shower are operated by one monobloc unit with a single tap which mixes the hot and cold water to regulate the temperature while others operate from a tap that is moved from side to side to get the best water temperature. This type of hand shower fitting is usually part of the tap system and you will push a lever, or pull a knob to change the water flow from the shower to the taps. You can then stand the hand shower in its fitting unit above the bath, or use it by holding it in your hand.
Obviously, the plastic, or very simple rubber hand shower which is just pushed onto your bath taps is the cheapest and you can fit these yourself, but if you want to fit a mixer type hand shower you may need to ask a plumber to do this for you. It all depends on what you want. A rubber or plastic shower may suit your needs but some new chrome hand shower unit look quite hi tech and will add something special to a bathroom, but they do cost more and in some cases can be just as expensive as buying and fitting a full over the bath shower unit.
Sometimes a hand shower is useful as an extra shower. It can be held and aimed exactly where you want it which is good for aching limbs. You can even fix your hand shower to the arm on the over bath shower and take it down when you need it, or instead of buying a new unit use a tap converter on your existing bath taps.
