Carbon fiber (CF for short) is one kind of new material with excellent mechanical performance. CF's tensile strength ranges from 2GPa to 7GPa, tensile modulus is from 200GPa to 700GPa. The density is from 1.5-2.0g/cm3 which is majorly determined by the carbonizing treatment temperature besides apart from its original construction. Its density could reach 2.0g/cm3 after graphitization at 3000℃; Of light weight, and lighter specific gravity than aluminum which is less than 1/4 that of steel, the specific strength of CF is 20 times that of steel. The thermal expansion coefficient of CF is different from other fibers and it is anisotropic. Specific heat capacity 7.12. Its thermal conductivity decreases while the temperature increases, the thermal conductivity paralleled to the fiber direction is negative value(from 0.72 to 0.90) and perpendicular to the fiber direction is positive value (from 32 to 22). The specific resistance of CF is related to the CF type, the high modulus at 25℃ is 775 and high strength CF is 1500 per centimeter. CF owns the highest specific strength and the highest specific modulus among all the high performance fibers. Compared with metal materials like titanium, steel, aluminum and others, CF owns many advantages, such as high tensile strength, high modulus, low density, small linear expansion coefficient and so on and could be called as king of the new material.

Apart from the carbon material properties, CF also possesses obviously anisotropic softness and could be processed into all kinds of fabrics. With small specific gravity as well as high tensile strength in fiber direction, CF reinforced epoxy resin composite owns the highest specific strength and specific modulus among the existing structural materials. The tensile strength of CF composite material is generally over 3500MPa, 7 to 9 times that of steel and elastic tensile modulus is from 230 to 430GPa which is also higher than that of steel; Therefore, the specific strength, namely the ratio of strength and density, of CFRP could reach 2000MPa while the specific strength of A3 steel is only 59MPa and CFRP's specific modulus is higher than steel's. Its Young modulus (the materials' stretching resistant and compression resistant physical quantity within the elastic limit ) is over 3 times of GF's and about twice of kevlar fiber's. The test on CF epoxy resin laminated board shows that strength and modulus decreases while the porosity increases. Porosity has a great effect on interlaminar shear strength, bending strength and bending modulus; the tensile strength decreases relatively slow with the increasing of porosity; the porosity has a little influence on tensile modulus.

CF has extremely good fiber number(one of the fiber number's identifications is the grammage of the fiber of 9000 meter in length), normally about 19 gram but the tension reach up to 300kg/micrometer. Few other materials own that many excellent performances like CF, and CF is applied in fields with rigorous requirements, like rigidity, fatigue resistance and so on. The heat resistant temperature of CF in environment without air and antioxidant could reach over 3000℃, its strength begins to decrease when temperature is over 1500℃ and the higher the temperature is, the higher the strength is. CF's radial strength is weaker than its axial strength, the radical mightiness should be avoid(namely, the CF cannot be knotted) and the whisker properties of other materials have decreased sharply. CF also has favorable cold resistance and does not tendering at liquid nitrogen temperature.

CF composite material owns excellent mechanical property, good chemical stability, favorable bio-compatibility with human body, poisonless and tasteless, high X-Ray transmittance and low energy loss, so it is widely used in medical device and biomaterial. CF board, thickness 1mm. Its X-Ray clarity is 96%, the consumption of scattering and absorbing is 4% and the total losses is less than 1/5 of medical bed-boards of traditional materials. The CF composite is widely applied in this area because of its light weight, high strength, flexibility, and special functions. The maximum dimension of bed board could reach up to 2800*600*40.
