Whenever pipes and ducts are subject toexpansion caused by frequent changes in temperature or pressure, when vibrationsor movements occur in piping/ducting systems, when fluids are to be conveyedwithout leakage caused by pressure and high load must be sustained or vacuum ispresent, flexible joints are required. These components include Metal expansionjoint, Metal flexible hose, Rubber Expansion Joint, Rubber hose, Composite Hose,Textile Fabrics Expansion Joint.

Expansion jointis simply a bellows element with end connections. Regardless of accessories,such as liners and covers, it will deflect in any direction or plane that thebellows will. It is the least expensive type, but requires that the piping becontrolled as to the direction of the movements required of the unit. Theexpansion joint should not be expected to control the movement of the pipe. Ifthe piping analysis shows that the expansion joint must accept axialcompression, then the piping must be guided and constrained so that only thatmovement will occur. This expansion joint will not resist any deflections withany force other than the resistance of the bellows, which is a function of thespring rate times the deflection amount. It is incapable of resisting thepressure thrust along its axis, which is the product of the pressure times theeffective, or cross sectional, area of the bellows. Large diameter units, evenwith low pressures, can generate very large axial pressure thrust forces, whichmust be reacted by main and directional anchors. Otherwise the expansion jointwill extend with disastrous results.
