They do require some up keep as the wood can quickly dry out causing disastrous cracking. It is encouraged to use this type of wood bathtub every day and to apply specialized oils to keep the wood moist. Teak is a good wood for wood bathtubs and is recommended by many as the longest lasting.

Other manufacturers apply a coating of fiberglass over every surface of the wood to protect it from the elements. This method is similar to that used by boat builders. The fiberglass is clear to allow the natural beauty of the wood to be seen. These wooden bathtubs require very little care and are treated much like a bathtub made from any other material.
