Bamboo Skewers: A cheap alternative to metal skewers
When I saw this object on epinions I knew I had to write a review on it. This has got to be one of the most mundane and useless objects to review on epinions, so I had to do it. I told my wife about it and she looked at me and said I was addicted, I proceeded grin and nod in agreement. And so begins a review that only pales in comparison to the review done on post-it notes.
These are bamboo skewers that I have used for both cooking shish kabobs and tempura. They handle oil very well and work well in an oven. They are ideal for these purposes when you need to hold food in place. They can work on your grill (direct heat) but there are issues with that I will address.
What's so good about them?
The first reason they are used is because they are cheap. You will generally throw them out when you are done and not worry about the cost.
They have a good amount of surface friction, much more than a simple uncurved metal skewer. So food is less likely to fall off these then a simple skewer. Food is also less like to spin around while on the skewer (but these problems do exist from time to time).
The other reason is their strength. They are incredible strong for their weight and will not bend as easily as simple/cheap metal skewers.
One other good thing about bamboo skewers is they are non-conductive. They do not get extremely hot when you use them in oil. So this makes it ideal for certain deep fried dishes like tempura (you would never use metal skewers for tempura but you may use the Joyce Chen Brass Mesh Skimmer .)
How to keep them from burning on the grill.
If you just put these on the grill then they will burn on the ends. This leaves a carbon residue on the food that is on the outer most edges. The solution is to soak the bamboo skewers in water for an hour before you use it. The water prevents the skewers form burning in all but the highest of heats.
