Cleaning one's house is a personal issue. Most people have specific ways they like to do things, and different people tolerate different levels of cleanliness. I am one of those people who prefer to clean my own home. I have often thought about residential cleaning services, as there are many companies here from which to choose. I understand having a maid has lots of benefits, but every time I get ready to call, I remember why I prefer to clean myself instead of hiring a maid service.

The first problem I have with cleaners coming to my home, or any helpers for that matter, even my family, is that I do not use any type of harsh cleaners. The toxins in cleaners make people sick, plus, there is no reason for something so heavy duty in a home. I understand that most maid services will use your own products, but I really prefer vinegar and water for most cleaning. Vinegar is a disinfectant, plus it removes even the blackest grease. Further, I do not believe that others take the same care with possessions that I do. Both my kitchen and bathroom have been gutted and renovated. All the faucets, sinks, stove top, and accessories are new. I look after my things, and ensure that I do not scrub with abrasives. I do not want anything scratched up and looking old. And, I do not believe that others will value the items in the same way.

Second, I am worried about security. It is not so much that I have expensive things in my home, but rather, people quickly become familiar with my habits, and the comings and goings of my grandchildren. I personally do not like the children to get friendly enough with these people, thinking that they are family friends. I also worry about the people who take these jobs to "case homes". They see that you work in your home, that you have computer equipment, and other electronics. They might not be the thieves in terms of breaking in, but it is the people they tell that are the problems. Lastly, I have had small things misplaced when maid services have cleaned my home in the past.

The third issue I have with employing a maid service is that some cleaners think that it is okay to sit on the sofa, use the telephone, and make themselves comfortable. I do not sit on my own furniture when I am dusty and dirty doing the house cleaning. Why would I want strangers using my things and bringing germs into the house? And, for those individuals that smoke, the stink is on their clothing and belongings, and that just brings that smell into the house as well. Both myself and my grandchildren are allergic, so our episodes start up right away when we are near smokers.

Finally, when employing a maid service, there are generally two types, neither of which fit my ideal house cleaning situation. Some companies tell the employees not to touch anything, to clean around items. So, for example, if they are dusting your dresser and the jewelry box is sitting on top, they do not move the box and dust underneath, they just dust around. Basically, I have paid to get my house cleaned, but I have to do it again. The other services will do your dishes and cleaning if you order the services, but, then you have to teach them where everything goes. It becomes more of a nuisance than a help.

Really and truly, there are many reasons for me to clean my own home, but these are the main reasons why I prefer to clean myself instead of hiring a maid service.
