 Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., has developed the "CONSULT-III," a handheld diagnostic tester for various in-vehicle electronicsystems, with the aim of realizing swift and accurate diagnosis and repairs atNissan dealerships worldwide. The diagnostic tester will be introduced at Nissandealerships in Japan and other global markets. The roll-out of the new systemwill coincide with the introduction of the Skyline sedan in Japan this month,and global markets where the Infiniti G35 will be sold, followed progressivelyby all other remaining markets as new generation products are introduced.
Theaccurate and speedy diagnosis of a vehicle's problem has become increasinglycomplicated as more sophisticated electronic hardware is fitted in vehicles,combined with a significant increase in the number of computers connected to theController Area Network (CAN). In the past five-year period, the number ofcomputer systems fitted in today's vehicles has doubled from only approximatelyeight in 2001. The CONSULT-III is specifically designed to address these complexand advanced in-vehicle electronic devices, enabling accurate diagnosis andrepairs and shortening waiting times for customers.
The basic diagnosticsystem is composed of the main unit i.e. an extra-durable and rugged laptop PC,a wireless vehicle communication interface and wireless measurement interface;the laptop PC and each interface is connected via Bluetooth technology. Througha wireless LAN, this diagnostic system can be connected to the Nissan network inJapan, enabling the dealerships to retrieve information from various sources anddisplay service technology data on the laptop PC.
Features ofCONSULT-III:
1.Swift diagnosis and swift repairs through automatedoperations:
The selection of CAN type as well as the identification ofmalfunction locations are completely automated, allowing CAN diagnosis to bedone 17 times faster than previous method where the diagnostics system needed tobe supplemented by the service manuals. Repairs involving reprogramming of thein-vehicle computer can be completed 1.5 to 2.5 times faster with the newsystem.
2.Automated Self-Diagnostics:
The system is able to performaccurate diagnosis without having to rely on the diagnostic skills of technicalstaff at the dealership.
3.Increased efficiency in operations based onwireless technology:
With wireless vehicle communication interface, it ispossible to check the condition of the vehicle from either (*2) inside oroutside the vehicle. At dealerships in Japan, it is possible to access theNissan network to retrieve both the maintenance technology data related to thediagnosis results and spot adequate information on service manual. Thedealerships are also able to access their service database and refer to thevehicle?s maintenance history on the laptop PC.
4.Capable of handlingmultiple complex defects:
The diagnostics tool is equipped with variousfunctions including simultaneous self-diagnosis of an entire system,simultaneous data monitor for multiple systems, data recorder, and oscilloscopecapability.
5.Enhanced data management with improved laptop PC:
Newfeatures such as adoption of color-screen and large-screen monitor allow viewingof large amounts of information altogether for enhanced datamanagement.
6.Map data update function for hard-disk navigationsystem:
Through high-speed data update system, it is possible to update mapdata in approximately 20 minutes with the new CARWINGS navigation system(hard-disk) equipped in the all-new Skyline and other futureproducts.
